Glass and Glass Repair

In 1964 M&T Glass was just a “glass store”. Mostly window panes for home and business repair and replacement. Little variety beyond “Single & Double Diamond”.

Although we offer much more now, at our heart and foundation we’re still a glass store! Everyday we sell, cut, shape, polish, drill and create. Today it’s Float Glass for your everyday glass needs; like picture and decorative frames, storm windows and doors, glass for the cottage, some shelving (tempered glass may be recommended), interior door and window glass, protective furniture covers and aquarium/terrarium tanks or enclosures just to name a few! Much of the glass we sell is available varying thicknesses from 2mm up and some can be finished with custom Edgework.

Fire Rated Glass

Many applications require fire rated glass. For those requirements we offer Neoceram®/Robax® and, Firelite®. In certain fire rated applications Georgian Polished or Cast Wire (GPW/GCW) is also used however please check your requirements before selecting this as an option.

Tempered Glass

Also known as toughened glass, tempered glass is used for commercial (and certain residential) doors and windows, some fireplace doors, commercial shelving, and cabinet doors. As its name suggests, this glass is processed by controlled thermal (extreme heating and rapid cooling) or chemical elements to make it four to five times more durable than regular glass. Generally speaking, it doesn’t shatter—creating dangerous shards—when damaged; instead, it fractures into hundreds of small particles but still remains together. Call us if you have experienced tempered glass shatter in your home or business and, our experts will be happy to assist with your glass repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between tempered glass and laminated safety glass?

Tempered glass is heat-treated to be up to 4-5 times stronger than standard glass and breaks into small, harmless granular pebbles. Laminated safety glass features a protective PVB interlayer between two glass sheets, keeping the glass bound together even when shattered.

Where is safety glass required by Ontario Building Code?

Safety glass is required in high-impact or hazardous areas, including shower enclosures, patio doors, glass railings, commercial storefronts, skylights, and windows installed near floors or doors.

Can tempered safety glass be cut or resized after it is made?

No. Tempered glass cannot be cut, drilled, or edged once it undergoes the tempering process. All measurements, cutouts, and edge treatments must be precisely completed before heat processing.

Does M&T Glass offer custom safety glass cutting for emergency repairs?

Yes! We stock laminated safety glass that can be custom cut on-site for immediate emergency door and window repairs, and we order custom-measured tempered panels tailored to your exact specifications.

Laminated Glass

Laminated glass is composed of two or more panes of glass that are bonded together (using heat and pressure) with an interlayer of either polyvinyl butyral (PVB) or ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA), and is commonly used for commercial doors and windows (e.g. skylights), architectural applications, and in environments where human impact is a possibility. Its strong resistance to objects piercing through it make laminated glass great for minimizing any risk of injury should it break or crack. Laminated glass is also highly utilized in ballistic resistant and security applications.

Georgian Polished Wire or Georgian Cast Wire Glass

Most commonly referred to as GPW or GCW respectively, and characterized by a steel wire mesh within the body of the glass, this fire-resistant glass usually stays in place when broken. It can however be more prone to breakage than other types of glass. It is effective in a variety of applications such as fire-rated doors, gymnasium doors, arena doors and windows, in certain products to help minimize the spread of hot gases and flames, and even for decorative cabinet doors.

Tinted Glass

Besides patterned glass we also carry tinted (grey & bronze) and black Graylite 14®.

Glass can shatter or crack unexpectedly, taking you by surprise—even if you have safety glass. That’s why M&T Glass offers expert glass repair service in the Ottawa area, as well as 24-hour emergency service, so we’re always available when you need us.
